In popular use for over fifteen hundred years, the Hamsa (Chamsa), from the Semitic root meaning five, is a representation of the protective hand of God. Hand amulets are common in many cultures as talismans to ward off the evil eye and, appropriately, many Hamsas have a single eye embedded in the center of the palm to depict Gods watchful presence. Jews were among the first to use the amulet for protection, and today it is commonly worn or hang on the wall as a good luck charm.
This bookmark is made of pewter and zinc alloys and plated with silver. The long stem marks the page while the Hamsa decorates the book. Even when the book is placed in a bookcase the Hamsa is visible on top.
~ Bookmark is 8 ½ long, including the Hamsa thats 2 long.
