Brass Hamsa by Shraga Landesman

The Hamsa was originally “The Hand of Fatma”. The process of bringing the Hamsa into Judaism begins with Joseph, according to the Talmud. This Hamsa relates to that subject. The design of the hand is similar to an archeological find from west of Hebron. There, in a burial cave archeologists found that shape of a hand with Hebrew writing above it. It is possible that this is the most ancient form of The Hand of Fatma, later to become “Hamsa”. The back of the Hamsa is decorated with a graphic design of one of Joseph’s dreams describing the large wheat and the small wheat.
